Iron Ear is made by a very small studio, which means the person who reads your email is the person who fixes the bug. No ticket queue, no chatbot — just write to us.

A rating from a real player helps other guitarists find the app more than anything else we could do. It takes about twenty seconds.

Common questions

I can’t hear anything

Work down this list — it is almost always one of these:

  • Check the ring/silent switch on the side of the phone. Iron Ear is built to sound even with silent mode on, but a Focus mode or a stuck switch can still get in the way.
  • Turn the volume up with the physical buttons while Iron Ear is on screen, so you are adjusting media volume rather than ringer volume.
  • Check where the audio is going. If a Bluetooth speaker, AirPods or a car stereo are connected, the sound is going there. Open Control Centre and switch output back to iPhone.
  • If you have a call, a voice memo or another audio app running, close it and come back.

Still silent? Email us with your iPhone model and iOS version.

Does it work offline?

Yes — entirely. Every trainer, every fretboard, the chord library, the circle of fifths and the tuner all run on the device. Iron Ear has no networking code in it, so airplane mode, a dead hotel Wi-Fi or the middle of a tunnel change nothing at all.

Why does Iron Ear ask for the microphone?

Only for the tuner. iOS asks the first time you open it; the audio is analysed on the phone in real time to read your pitch and is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere. If you say no, everything except the tuner still works — you can change your mind later in Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.

Where is my data stored?

On your device, and only on your device. Scores, streaks, per-trainer stats and your settings (tuning, key, difficulty, tempo, flats preference) are written to the phone’s own storage. Nothing is uploaded, because there is nowhere for it to go.

That has one consequence worth knowing: deleting Iron Ear deletes your stats along with it, and they are not recoverable. There is no backup on our side because we never had a copy.

How do I reset my stats?

Open the gear icon in the app header to reach Settings, then choose Reset all stats. It clears your score, streak and per-trainer history in one go and asks you to confirm first. Your settings are left alone.

Which devices does it run on?

iPhone running iOS 17 or later. Iron Ear is designed portrait-first for iPhone, and it also runs on iPad in compatibility mode. There is no Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV or Android version.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not by us — we never see your payment details and have no way to issue one. Apple explains how to request a refund here: Request a refund for apps or content that you bought from Apple.

If the reason for the refund is something we could fix, we would genuinely like to hear about it first.

I have a feature request

Send it to support@iron-ear.com. Requests that come with a sentence about how you practise are the ones that tend to get built — knowing why you want a thing shapes it far more than knowing what it is.

Is there a subscription, or in-app purchases?

No. Iron Ear is $0.99 once, and that is the entire commercial relationship. No subscription, no in-app purchases, no unlockable tiers, no ads, and no account to create. Updates are included.

Furnace, the plug-in

Our free Audio Unit and VST3 guitar effect for macOS. Furnace has its own page with the full control list.

Where does Furnace show up in Logic?

On an audio track, open the Audio FX slot and go to Audio Units → Iron Ear → Furnace. If Logic was already running when you installed it, quit Logic and open it again first — plug-ins are only scanned at launch, so a fresh install is invisible until you restart.

Will it run on my Mac?

Furnace needs macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon — an M1 or newer. Intel Macs are not supported, and there is no Windows build: it is macOS today.

My VST3 host can’t see it

Rescan your plug-ins. Reaper, Ableton Live, Cubase, Bitwig and Studio One all cache the plug-ins they found last time and will not notice a new one until you ask them to look again — the setting is usually under preferences, near the plug-in folder list.

The installer puts the VST3 in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3, which is the standard system location every VST3 host scans by default. If your host has been pointed at a custom folder instead, add that path to its list.

Where do my Furnace presets live?

In ~/Library/Application Support/Iron Ear/Furnace/Presets. The ten factory presets ship with the plug-in; anything you save goes in the same folder, so you can back it up, copy it to another machine or hand a patch to someone else just by moving files.

How do I uninstall Furnace?

Delete these two files and empty the Trash:

  • /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/Furnace.component
  • /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/Furnace.vst3

That is the whole plug-in — there is no uninstaller and nothing else is left behind. Your presets stay where they are, in ~/Library/Application Support/Iron Ear/Furnace/Presets, so reinstalling later picks them straight back up. Delete that folder too if you want it properly gone.

Is Furnace really free?

Yes. No account, no email address, no licence key, no trial period and no telemetry — the plug-in makes no network connections at all. Download it, run the installer, use it on whatever you like.
